Madrid vs Barcelona: The Best City for Digital Nomads in 2025

Spain's two biggest cities are both popular with digital nomads, but they offer very different experiences. Here's an honest comparison to help you decide.

Cost of Living

Madrid and Barcelona are similarly priced, with 1-bedroom apartments in the center costing €1,200–1,800/month. Barcelona's Eixample and Gràcia neighborhoods tend to run slightly higher than Madrid's Malasaña or Chamberí.

Eating out is marginally cheaper in Madrid. A lunch menu del día runs €11–14 in both cities.

Coworking & Tech Scene

Madrid has a larger financial and corporate presence, with WeWork, Spaces, and numerous independent coworking spaces. It's home to Google's largest European campus and many fintech startups.

Barcelona has a stronger startup and tech ecosystem, fueled by Mobile World Congress and a long history as a tech hub. Spaces like MOB, Aticco, and Betahaus are popular with nomads.

Lifestyle

Barcelona wins on beach access — Barceloneta and surrounding beaches are a metro ride away. The city has a more relaxed, Mediterranean vibe.

Madrid wins on nightlife, culture, and museums. The Prado, Reina Sofía, and Retiro Park are world-class. The city feels more "authentically Spanish" to many expats.

Weather

Both cities get 300+ sunny days. Barcelona is more humid in summer (coastal). Madrid has drier heat and colder winters, but is generally more comfortable year-round for indoor work.

Internet & Infrastructure

Both cities have excellent fiber internet (300–600 Mbps is standard in apartments). Spain consistently ranks in the top 15 globally for internet speed.

Expat Community

Barcelona has a larger international nomad community, partly due to its beach lifestyle and tech reputation. English is more widely spoken.

Madrid has a growing expat scene but is more Spanish-speaking. This can be a plus if you want to immerse in the language and culture.

Our verdict

  • Choose Barcelona if you want beach + tech + international community.
  • Choose Madrid if you want culture + networking + a more local experience.
  • Consider Valencia if you want the best of both at 30% lower cost.
